Once you arrive in Toraja, you still need a means of transportation to explore the whole Toraja easily. Seeing things on foot is not practical unless you really like walking and have weeks to see the sights. If you do not have much time in Toraja, then you’ll need transport.
Public Transportation
If you want to wander anyway, there are several options to take since the public transportation only runs on certain route of town. Angkot or Pete’-Pete’ is the inner city transportation and travel (intercity transportation between Makale and Rantepao vv.) are the easiest modes of public transportation. Operating from 06.30am till 18.00pm daily, sometimes stopping earlier and running less frequently in remoter area. There are 2 (two) main bus terminal in Toraja; Makale for Tana Toraja and Pasar Bolu for Toraja Utara. The rate starts from US$ 1.00 per way per person.
Motorbike Rental & Car Rental
Chartered vehicles such as minivan can be booked at hotels or from car rental services available in Makale and Rantepao. If you are traveling with a small group, or family with kids, then this is the right choice for exploring Toraja.
In some areas in Toraja, there are still interesting places that are usually hard to reach as the access can have narrow and extremely bumpy roads. Those craving for more adventure could rent a motorbike to explore the remote areas and villages of the highlands. How much will it cost to rent a motorbike in Toraja? It really depends on how long you’re wanting to rent. Tourist offices, and some hotels usually serves rental motorbikes Rp 70,000 per day.
Just a suggestion for you, if you prefer to rent a motorbike, always wear a helmet and protective clothing. Riding a motorcycle is freeing, wind-in-hair sensation, but don’t ride around shirtless or without a helmet. Besides for your own safety, disobedient riding only invites definite police stops and contempt among local riders.
One of the best alternative to explore Toraja is to rent a bicycle, or if you need a more relaxing trip then you can use a professional tour company to plan and organize your trip.
I am visiting Toraja this weekend. Can you tell from where can I rent a bike?
